ThunderSync allows you to synchronise Thunderbird’s addressbook with external directories/files. Every contact is exported/compared with an external file. Right now, only vCard version 2.1 is supported as export file format.

Due to the vague documentation on message processing I cancelled IMAP support in version 2.0. Perhaps I’m capable of adding it in future versions. If you know details on IMAP message processing from within Thunderbird extensions, please let me know!

  3. Hi!

    Cool tool – I use it for a large number of contacts into a small number of vcf files (private, work, …) Your export is very slow. The problem is, that you are exporting everything, although not all files are touched. This means many file opens and closes. I improved speed significantly by remembering the filenames that are needed for the changes in the sync() function and hand it to the write(). Here, all other contacts are skipped. This saves a lot of time for me.

    • Well, I thought I had implemented such functionality? Write is supposed to only process modified contacts. There’s a ModDB structure to keep track of such modifications…?

  4. Just installed in TB 10.0 with test address book and it duplicated my single address list 10 times but with no contents. Does ThunderSync support address lists please?

      • Ouch, no support for lists means having a flat address book, I hardly see where it’s possible in real life when using the AB intensively :-(. Too bad, I was evaluating the AB sync tools available for TBird and yours seemed to be the most advanced/reliable one. Do you plan on adding support for lists (objectclass: groupOfNames) at anytime or simply not at all? For now, the only way I found to get lists in sync is exporting/deleting/importing w/ TBird factory tools.

    I would like to sync to an FTP site. This way all my computers will have the latest contact info available. I tried specifying a folder on my FTP for the External Resource but it did not work. Are you planning on adding this feature?

    Just one question : is it possible to have cvf files named after the contact name, and not with a 20+ characters such as 28f24fr6e5s7q4q2 etc.? It would be easier to transfer to another device separately.

    • Thank you!

      The first versions of ThunderSync indeed named the vCard files using the contact’s name. But after feedback from users I changed that to the unique identifier system used today. This avoids file name collisions due to multiple contacts with the same name.

  7. Ok. Tks for that update. Would it be possible anyway to have a way of easily identifying the contact name? It could be helpful if we just want to view, get or modified one of the cards.

    • It might be possible to generate an extra text file with a mapping of UID to contact name. I’ll give it a try in a future update.

      On the other hand, vCard files are simple text files. Therefore you could uses your system’s search function to look for a specific name inside a set of files. For example, with Unix/Linux you can simply “grep” the files. As I understand, OS X manages the user’s files mainly by elaborate searches on metadata…

    wieso bekomme ich beim Export nur “wilde” Dateinamen aus Buchstaben und Zahlenkombination und nicht einen Dateinamen aus Vorname.Nachname?

    • So ein “wilder” Dateiname entspricht der eindeutigen Kennziffer (Unique Identifier, UID), die jedem Kontakt vergeben wird.

      In früheren Versionen hatte ich noch Dateinamen aus dem Anzeigenamen erzeugt. Allerdings ist es dann nicht möglich, verschiedene Kontakte mit gleichem Namen zu verwalten (z.B. mehrere Hans Müllers oder John Smiths). Und da Benutzer diese Eigenschaft angefragt hatten, bin ich zur Benennung mittels UID übergegangen.

    Ich habe eine kleine Frage. Besteht die Möglichkeit, dass sie ihr Add-on auf Carddav erweitern?
    Da ich von Windows, Linux wie auch Mobiltelefon auf die Daten zugreifen möchte versuche ich derzeit Owncloud auf meinem Webspace zum laufen zu bekommen. Was es bisher leider aus unbekannten Gründen nicht tut. Daher noch meine zweite Frage. Wie gut läuft die Synchronisation auf einen FTP?

    Ich habe meine Telefonnummern in folgendem Format im Adressbuch eingegeben: +49 (0171) 123456. Jetzt habe ich zum ersten Mal Thundersync getestet und herausgefunden, dass es die 0 von der Ortsvorwahl nicht maskiert und löscht. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit diese “0” bei der Umwandlung in .vcf zu ignorieren?

    • ThunderSync modifiziert die Telefonnummer nicht, da es auf der Welt recht viele denkbare Formate gibt und dieses auch nicht die Aufgabe von ThunderSync (=Abgleich von Daten) ist.

      Sie müssten also entweder auf Thunderbird-Seite für eine korrekte Formatierung sorgen oder aber die vcf-Textdateien bearbeiten (das geht auch automatisch mit Suchen/Ersetzen oder sed/awk).

    seit ich v15.0.1 installiert habe, funktioniert bei mir das synchronisieren nicht mehr. habe ich eine einstellung übersehen oder muss thundersync hierfür erst modifiziert werden?

    • Da ich Version 15.0.1 nicht installiert habe und diese Version auch in Gentoo noch nicht als “stable” markiert ist, kann ich dazu erst einmal nichts sagen. Aber normalerweise informiert mich Mozilla automatisch, wenn eine neue Thunderbird-Version inkompatibel mit ThunderSync ist…

      • das erklärt natürlich einiges, ich sollte das auto-update deaktivieren. meines erachtens nach liegt es an dem chat-namen, den man nun bei den kontakten einfügen kann. aber das ist nur eine vermutung. vielen dank erstmal für die auskunft.

    seit ein paar Wochen nutze ich Thundersync.
    Bei jedem versenden einer Mail aus dem Adressbuch werde ich aufgefordert den
    Popilaritätsindex zu synchronisieren, obwohl ich unter den Filteroptionen diesen Punkt auf ignorieren gestellt habe. Was mache ich falsch? Ich nutzer Thunderbird 16.02 und Thundersysnc 2.1. An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich für das wunderbare Addon bedanken!

    • Das Problem ist mir bekannt, aber bislang habe ich noch nicht herausgefunden, warum dieses Verhalten auftaucht. Denn PopularityIndex wird wie andere Eigenschaften behandelt. Meine Erklärung bis dato ist, dass PopularityIndex von Thunderbird intern anders behandelt wird…

    Thunderbird kennt mittlerweile mehrere Felder für verschiedene Chat-Konten. Wenn man etwas bei AIM einträgt, wird es synchronisiert (als “X-MOZILLA-PROPERTY:_AimScreenName”), die anderen Felder leider nicht. Können Sie das ändern?

    • Ja, ThunderSync stammt ja noch aus der Zeit, als die Versionsnummern nicht einfach wöchentlich nach oben gingen. Es sind wohl einige Neuerungen hinzugekommen, die ich dieses Jahr noch einpflegen will.

    tried to use ThunderSync, which seems to be a quite helpful extension, but unfortunately immediately hit a bug: It seems escaping is not handled properly which causes information to be lost.

    How to reproduce: Try to synchronise with a vCard which contains semicolons in the “Notes” field, everything after the first semicolon is lost, e.g. importing “NOTE;CHARSET=UTF-8:Note1, Note2; Note3” is cropped to “Note1, Note2” in the Thunderbird AddressBook.

    This also seems to be the root cause for comparisons failing if the field contains semicolons.

    • Well, ThunderSync does handle the semicolon issue at least while writing vCards. If addressbook fields containing semicolon characters are encountered, these get escaped with a backslash.

      I notice that interpreting masked semicolons was marked as “todo” by me some time ago. I will put this on the list for an update release.

      (Nonetheless the sample above seems not to contain a masked semicolon, so ThunderSync’s behaviour is incidentally correct?)

      • Thanks for the promptly response! Maybe my use case wasn’t as elaborate as it should be:

        a) Create a contact in the Thunderbird AddressBook, put “Note1, Note2; Note3” in the “Notes” field
        b) Sync with ThunderSync to an empty directory, this will create “NOTE;CHARSET=UTF-8:Note1, Note2; Note3” <- wrong, no escaping!
        c) Sync with ThunderSync with the vCal file created in the previous step, this will always fail, as it compares "Note1, Note2; Note3" (Address Book) with "Note1, Note2" (from vCard)

        Would be great if you could implement the Escape handling from the specification!

    Aber seit heute habe ich (TB 17.0.2 mit Thundersync 2.1) ein Problem:
    Nach Klick auf “Addressbuch abgleichen” kommt nach ca. 20s ein Pop-up mit der Meldung eines nicht antwortenden Skripts:

    btw: was hat das mit chrome zu tun?

    • Mit “Chrome” wird bei Mozilla-Produkten schon seit vor-Google-Browser-Zeiten alles bezeichnet, was mit der Benutzeroberfläche zu tun hat.

      An der Code-Stelle in dem Programmteil werden die Eigenschaften der Einträge verglichen. Anscheinend ist da viel zu tun, so dass das Skript recht beschäftigt ist…

      • Da ist in der Tat viel zu tun – bin gerade beim bereinigen und zusammenführen von Telefon- und Mailkontakten aus mehreren Quellen.
        Aber auch Warten hat keinen Erfolg (“keine Rückmeldung”). Wenn ich auf Skript stoppen klicke, kommt zwar das Fenster, in dem angezeigt wird, welche Kontakte synchronisiert werden müssten, aber der Button “Synchronisieren” ist ausgegraut.
        Ich habe dann nochmal eines meiner Roh-Adressbücher importiert – unter anderem Namen – und nur 2-3 Kontakte geändert (gelöscht) und wollte dann das Adressbuch abgleichen – aber dann kam der selbe Fehler…!
        Habe auch schon mehrfach probiert TB und alle Add-Ons zu deinstallieren und TB neu nur mit ThunderSync (und Lightning) zu installieren – gleiches Fehlerbild.
        Ich weiß nicht was ich falsch mache – ich meine aber vor zwei Tagen hat das abgleichen noch funktioniert – auch mit gößeren Mengen an geänderten Einträgen (wir reden von 150-200 Kontakten). Habe mir am WE nen Wolf gegooglet nach Tools zum Adressbücher säubern / zusammenführen / synchronisieren und habe noch das eine oder andere Add-On in TB installiert – aber noch nicht ausprobiert. Nachdem der Fehler dann erstmals kam, habe ich gleich wieder alle Add-Ons deinstalliert – auch Thundersync – und dann nach TB Neuinstallation nur noch Thundersync dazu installiert – leider ohne Erfolg…

  21. Ich habe auf Linux Thunderbird 17.0.6 laufen. Ich habe eine ganze Reihe von Adressbüchern angelegt, ab nur eines wird bei der Konfiguration von Thundersync angezeigt (das alphabetisch erste, jedoch das 3. in der Reihenfolge der angelegten Adressbücher). Ich meine das Problem schon mal in einer früheren Version gehabt zu haben, und da gabs eine Lösung, nur welche war’s?? Irgendwie hatte es mit der Thunderbird Profildatei zu tun, glaube ich.

  23. I just installed thundersync fromn the add-ons manager with thunderbird 17.0.7
    However the address books are not shown in the thundersync preferences.

    Exporting (a pretty much empty) address book from android to .vcf and then importing into thunderbird does then show that address book in thundersync preferences. However as my contacts are in thunderbird that does not appear to help on it’s own. What I would like to be able to do is to export my thunderbird contacts in vcard format so I can import them into my android phone. Is this possible?

    • here too, thunderbird 17.0.6 on ubuntu 12.10, and the addressbooks are not listed in the preferences window

  25. Der Popularitätsindex lässt sich nicht vom Snchronisieren ausschalten. Das ist ungünstig, wenn mehrere Personen dieselben Kontakte nutzen möchten.
    Kann es sein, dass nur 500 Adressen verarbeitet werden können?

    • Das mit dem Popularitätsindex kann ich immer noch nicht nachvollziehen, denn diese Eigenschaft wird wie alle anderen behandelt. Es kann sich hierbei evtl. um eine Eigenheit von Thunderbird handeln.

      Es gibt keine Obergrenze für die Anzahl verarbeitbarer Adressen. Jedenfalls habe ich keine einprogrammiert.

  26. Ist es möglich ein aktuelleres vCard Format zu wählen (Version 4.0)?
    Ich habe leider ein paar Probleme mit anderen Apps auf meinem Handy welche die .vcf-Datei auslesen und syncen und welche nur 4.0 (offiziell) unterstützen.

    vielen Dank für diesen wundervollen App.

    Hätte eventuell einen Fehler entdeckt.
    Habe mehrere Adressbücher die über den Programm gesynct werden. Ich möchte aber nicht alle einzelnen Felder synchonisieren. Daher gehe ich im Adressbuch z.b. bei Popularitätsindex mit der rechten Maustaste auf “ignorieren”. Funktioniert auch. Gehe dann beim zweiten Adressbuch auf “ignornieren”.
    Nun ist es so, dass dies gar nicht funktioniert oder es funktioniert und er stellt ein andres Adressbuch wieder von “ignorieren” auf “nachfragen” um.

    Wenn ich nun 6 Adressbücher habe, so kann ich nur in einem auf “ignorieren” gehen und nicht bei allen 6 Adressbüchern.

    Vielleicht gibt es hier eine Abhilfe. Besten Dank

    eigentlich mach die thundersync genau das was ich suchte – nur funktioniert es nicht mit einer zweiten email adressen im importierten vcard. die wird im thunderbird adresseintrag nicht angezeigt. oder mach ich was falsch?

    ich wollte eines meiner Adressbücher über Thundersync in eine Datei im vcard-Format exportieren. Ich komme in die Einstelllungen und habe alles eingestellt, aber wie startet der Export? Bei ‘ok’ passiert nichts weiter. Was übersehe ich?

  33. Entschuldigung, falls das ein doppelter Post wird, der letzte scheint nicht angekommen zu sein:
    Wie muss ich ThunderSync konfigurieren, damit csv-Dateien aus der Nokia-Suite korrekt synchronisiert werden? Bei mir werden nur die Kontakte wechselseitig kopiert, so dass hinterher die Kontakte im Addressbuch und im Ordner mit den vcf-Dateien doppelt sind.
    Ich konnte nicht herausfinden, mit welcher vCard-Version die Nokia-Suite die Kontakte exportiert.

    • Hmm, mit dem Ausgabeformat von der Nokia-Suite kenne ich mich nicht aus. Falls es CSV-Dateien (Comma-Separated Values) sind, so kann ThunderSync nichts mit ihnen anfangen…

  34. I have exported address book from Palm Desktop as one vCard format file. I want add this contacts to my address book(AB) of Thunderbird mail. AB from Palm has Cyrillic-1251 coding, so for import I need set in ThunderSync import for Cyrillic-1251 coding, then contacts import correctly, but there is another problem. Each time I start or close Thunderbird, I see syncronization window. What can I do to recode contact from Cyrillic-1251->UTF-8?

    Where can I find the resulting export file? After exporting, the export dialogue immediately dissappears, I have no clue where the extention puts the exported contacts and what the file is called, so I just can’t locate it.

    Die rot hinterlegten Optionen (Silent-Mode) lassen sich nicht auswählen bzw. speichern. Verwendete TB-Version 38.2.0
    Das Syncronisieren ohne Nachfrage wäre aber sehr wichtig. Gibt es dafür vielleicht noch einen versteckten Schalter?

    • Nein, da gibt es keinen versteckten Schalter. Allerdings hat das farbige Hinterlegen dafür gesorgt, dass ThunderSync diese farbigen Optionen nicht wahrnimmt. My bad. Ist in der aktuellen Version in git vorerst durch Verwerfen der Formatierung gelöst. Ich reiche ein aktualisiertes Paket nach.

  38. Hello and thanks for this great tool. I have recently been forced to use the built-in Windows Contacts mechanism (I on on Win10 but I believe this is also on Win7 and Win8). It turns out that Windows Contacts are stored in an XML format, one file per contact. Is there any chance that this format can be supported (at least for updating the information within ThunderBird)? Thanks very much!
