LCARSSHFS?

My current NAS setup is based on a Gentoo server and access via SSHFS. That is fine and works: I can mount my remote data as another path in my local home directory and any file access is secured over SSH (using PKI). But retrieving information, e.g. based on metadata, is a mess.

I have an idea to extend the SSHFS approach by making the file access purely virtual: interpret the path passed to SSHFS as search query and populate it with search results (library computer access and retrieval secure shell file system?).

A short recherche on the web yielded two projects from 2010 trying to implement it (without SSH):

  • Aleph-FS
  • Knowledge File System

Seems both projects did not make it beyond development stage… I wonder why this idea was never implemented?
