Brainstorming: ThunderSync Version 1.3

In summer I will be able to spend some time on ThunderSync development.

Feature list for version 1.3, derived from own ideas as well as user input:

  • Filter: list of properties to include/exclude from comparison (“don’t care” list)
  • possibility to just export/import all contacts
  • toolbar button
  • possibility to use one big vCard file for all contacts
  • IMAP-stored attachments as external target
  • separate dialog for vCard v2.1 interpretation (usage of quoted-printable, folding,…)

  1. Thunder sync stops with this message: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: chrome://thundersync/content/ThunderSyncDialog.js:742

    • Hmm, line 742 in ThunderSyncDialog is a “for” loop, comparing all properties of two contacts.

Don’t know why it should stop or be busy, and I never encountered such an error. Do you process a large number of contacts?

      • @Wayland and Frank
I have frequently encountered this with several address books (a total amount of about 250 addresses) under Win 7 and Vista. You just need to click the “go on” button as many times as requested.

        @Frank, Dave and Alfred
Unfortunately, ThunderSync does not work any longer with Th 5.0 or Th 6.0 under Win 7 or Vista : despite the path to the vcards is correct in the options, ThunderSync does not find any data when syncing is launched. (Setting the Thunderbird version to 6.* in the install.rdf file inside the.xpi of ThunderSync must be done prior to the installation). Th 5.0 and 6.0 seem to be rather stable!

  2. Would be fantastic to have a sync on shut-down option too please.

Otherwise additions to address book during a session are not synced until the user returns to use the same copy of TB on the same PC.

    Many thanks.

  3. Does this not work with the Windows 7 contacts? The addon can’t seem to recognize them, *.contact filenames?

    • It only works with so-called vCards in version 2.1.

A vCard is a small text file which contains contact information formatted in a certain way.

I don’t use Windows 7, so I don’t have a clue how these *.contact files are formatted.

  4. It would be nice to be able to import a vcard addressbook. Some email client (e.g. evolution) export the data under this format.

A vcard addressbook seems to be a trivial concatenation of vcards, so the parsing should not be difficult

  5. This extension works most excellently in Thunderbird 3, but in testing it on TB 5, everything looks the same, but the vcf files exported are empty, with a size reported as zero, as least on my system. Hope you are still working on this extension, thanks for making it.

    Regards, Dave

  6. Hello,

Please, could you upgrade your plug-in for ThunderBird 5 version ?

Thank you very much for your job.

    Best regards
    Fred
